Nathan Thomas - Payday Loans and Cash Advances

How confidential are Payday Loans?

Most people only take payday loans when they have no other way of obtaining the cash they need, and a lot of people are embarrassed at the prospect of getting a cash advance. Most lenders promise that they'll keep your loan completely confidential, but there is no real guarantee that your loan will remain a secret. Will your loan be confidential, or will people find out that you got one?

Payday LoanThe answer depends on your situation and the lender. Most will tell you that they operate on a confidential basis, and soon after they will inform you that they need to talk to your employer to verify employment and prove income. They promise discretion here, but it is difficult to understand how they could come by this information without disclosing the reasons why they need it. Even if they don't say that the information is for a cash advance, most bosses can tell why the information is being requested.

There is a strong likelihood that the payday lender will verify the other information you provided them with. It's possible that they'll call your landlord to see how long you've lived in your current residence, and some lenders even ask for character references. They again promise discretion when making these calls, but most people can easily figure out why they're calling. It's safe to assume that your loan will not be confidential if they ask to contact your employer or landlord, or if they ask for references.

In all fairness, there are some cash advance companies who do not contact your landlord or your boss, and all they ask for is your last paycheck stub. This is limited to in-person payday lending; if you are looking for an online payday loan, they will almost certainly have to verify the information you provide.

There are a lot of websites offering "confidential" payday loans or cash advances, but in their parlance, "confidential" means that their website is secure. You should never provide personal information on a site that's not secure; as to the actual confidentiality of the loan, it's safe to assume that if they need to independently verify any of your information, that someone else will be aware of your payday loan.
